Why study the Graduate Certificate in Education Studies at UNE?

The course will provide a pathway for candidates to pursue Master of Education study by reorienting or specialising in a range of areas. Some units are related to the School Curriculum, however these units are not intended for the purposes of teacher preparation in any particular method. Curriculum units in Mathematics; Social Science; Physical Education; English; Science, Creative Arts and Early Childhood can be undertaken in addition to units from other Graduate Certificate specialisations such as e-Learning; Indigenous Australian Education; International Schooling, Education and Development; School Leadership; Special Education; TESOL; and Gifted and Talented Education.

Career Opportunities

Professional enrichment of teacher; re-orienting chosen teaching allocation; provides a specialisation pathway to the Master of Education.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

(a) hold a three or four year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognized University or tertiary institution; or

(b) hold a bachelor degree and a one or two year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognized University; or

(c) hold a three year degree of a University approved by the School; or

(d) satisfy the School by means of other qualifications and relevant experience of adequate preparation for candidature; and

(e) comply with the University's English Language requirements.

Across various units in this award, there are school and workplace engagement which imbeds the learning in a relevant educational and professional context

Advanced Standing

At the discretion of the School, on the recommendation of the Course Coordinator and except for (c), a candidate may be granted a maximum of 12 credit points of advanced standing for:

(a) units that have been counted towards another postgraduate qualification at this or another University;

(b) units that have not counted towards another postgraduate qualification that have been completed at another University; and

(c) there shall be no maximum advanced standing on the basis of units that have not counted towards another postgraduate qualification that have been completed at this University.

1. Admission to Candidature
A candidate shall:
(a) hold a three-year or four year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognised University or tertiary institution; or
(b) hold a bachelor degree and a one or two year pre-service teaching qualification of a recognised University; or
(c) hold a three year degree of a University approved by the School; or
(d) satisfy the School by means of other qualifications and relevant experience of adequate preparation for candidature; and
(e) comply with the University's English Language requirements.

2. Award of Degree
A candidate who meets the course requirements shall be admitted to the Graduate Certificate in Education Studies.

3. Course Requirements
To qualify for the award, and except with the permission of the School, a candidate shall pass 24 credit points at 500-level from the following units:
EDAE 506, 514; EDCX 509, 510, 515, 528, 542, 547, 548, 555, 560; EDEC 500; EDEE 528, 529; EDIT 513, 517, 518, 521, 523; EDLA 502, 503, 504, 510, 519; EDLT 573, 581, 582, 584, 588, 590; EDME 534, 537; EDPE 543, 545; EDSE 563, 567; EDSL 515, 570, 577, 578, 584; EDSP 501, 502, 503, 504, 505; EDSS 571; EDUC 596, 597; EHPS 590, 591; GEPL 570.

4. Period of Candidature
The maxmimum period of candidature shall be:
(a) 6 months as a full-time candidate;
(b) two years as a part-time candidate.

5. Advanced Standing
At the discretion of the School, on the recommendation of the course coordinator and except for (c), a candidate may be granted a maximum of 12 credit points of advanced standing for:
(a) units that have been counted towards another postgraduate qualification at this or another University;
(b) units that have not counted towards another postgraduate qualification that have been completed at another University; and

6. Improper Conduct
