Unit Description

This unit introduces methods of research in the behavioural sciences. Topics covered will include measurement and operationalisation of constructs, the data collection process, and the design of simple studies. Statistics instruction includes descriptive measures, correlation and regression, the comparison of two or more groups in one-way and factorial designs, the logic of statistical inference, and the use of a statistical package (SPSS/PASW).

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of research findings as they relate to issues in a psychological context;
  2. independently select appropriate methodology to execute statistical analysis demonstrating your ability to evaluate, interpret and communicate the results to others;
  3. analyse and evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, and logic of selected statistical procedures;
  4. apply the use of a statistical software package to conduct a statistical analysis; and
  5. transmit their knowledge in written form using APA style methods and results sections.
