Why study the Bachelor of Languages and International Business at UNE?

This degree aims to equip students with the language skills (in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Indonesian, Japanese or Spanish), solid international business knowledge, and intercultural and cross-cultural understanding that will enable them to function effectively in an international work environment both in Australia and overseas.

Students spend an academic year in the country of their language major with one trimester of academic study at a partner university, followed by either one trimester of work placement or an additional trimester of academic study. This unique in-country experience will equip graduates with first-hand experience of a work environment in their target language and culture.

Currently, agreements or bilateral exchange agreements exist with specific universities or schools in China (Xi'an), France (Angers, Chambry, Saint-Etienne) and French-speaking Canada (Quebec City), Germany (Oldenburg, Trier) and Austria (Graz, Klagenfurt), Indonesia (Gajah Mada, Muhammadiyah), Italy (Macerata), Spain (Jan, Alicante) and Japan (Hiroshima, Kagoshima, Aichi-ken, Tokyo, Kanazawa). Such agreements mean that tuition fees are waived, that help is given with finding accommodation and that an element of pastoral care is provided. Some financial assistance is available in connection with study at certain of these universities. Students have the opportunity of completing a business work placement overseas in the country of their target language.

Career Opportunities

Examples include careers in international business; finance and economics; international marketing; management (especially in international agencies and companies); international relations; public relations; diplomacy; international law; tourism; as well as a range of public sector opportunities (eg, foreign affairs, policy, intelligence, security); translation and editing services.

Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Undergraduate and Postgraduate (Coursework) Rule and the Admission Undergraduate and Postgraduate (Coursework) Procedures).

Advanced Standing

Candidates are referred to the University Policy on Advanced Standing.
Advanced standing shall not be granted for the in-country residence units OSLS391 and OSLS392.

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) four years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to ten years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 192 credit points with not more than 60 credit points at 100-level and at least 36 credit points at 300/400-level, excluding the in-country residence units, OSLS391 and OSLS392, with not more than 12 credit points at 400-level. The in-country residence units shall not count towards the language major.

Candidates shall complete an approved program of study as outlined in the Course Schedule comprising:

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements including one approved major shall be awarded the Bachelor of Languages and International Business.

Exit Pathways

Candidates who wish to discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Bachelor of Arts on completion of 144 credit points, including 84 credit points at 200/300-level and not more than 12 credit points at 400-level, and 48 credits points in an approved language of which at least 18 credit points are at 300/400-level, excluding the in-country residence units OSLS391 and OSLS392.

Candidates who wish to discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in Modern Languages on completion of 48 credit points in one approved language, including not more than 18 credit points at 100-level and at least 12 credit points at 300-level, excluding in-country residence units OSLS391 and OSLS392.

Such candidates who wish to complete the Bachelor of Languages and International Business must reapply for admission and will be subject to the most current course rules.

Course Aims

This degree aims to equip students with the language skills (in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Indonesian, Japanese or Spanish), solid international business knowledge, and intercultural and cross-cultural understanding that will enable them to function effectively in an international work environment both in Australia and overseas.

Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate at a high-level of competence oral/aural and writing/reading skills in one or more language disciplines not including English;
  2. critically analyse, comment upon and interpret a variety of target language usages of varying degrees of complexity;
  3. research, plan, design and present clear, coherent and independent expositions in a variety of forms across a range of subjects;
  4. demonstrate general knowledge of specific inter-cultural and cross-cultural issues, practices and ethical values;
  5. demonstrate knowledge of current international business issues and the operation of organisations in the international economy; and
  6. apply theories, concepts, methods and analytical tools necessary for strategic management including marketing in different organisations.
Graduate Attributes
Knowledge of a Discipline

Graduates will be able to demonstrate specific theoretical and practical knowledge and skills related to their target language and culture(s), and international business. They will also have the capacity to become global citizens who will aspire to contribute to culturally and linguistically diverse societies in a comprehensive and meaningful way in a multicultural, multilingual and global context. They will be able to operate successfully in a multicultural, multilingual, international and global context. This will be assessed throughout the course through a range of different activities.

Communication Skills

Graduates will be able to communicate in their target language effectively and confidently both orally and in written forms. They will have the capability to operate within the register used in professional life and in the workplace, and will be aware of how this can be further enhanced. This will be assessed through various written, oral and online assessments.

Problem Solving

Graduates will be able to apply logical, analytical and creative thinking to a range of problems in their target language(s) and create new knowledge and understanding. They will demonstrate this through the process of research and by critically and culturally appropriately discussing, evaluating and interpreting a variety of authentic sources using either English or their target language(s) as medium of communication. The twelve-month period of in-country study will also develop the skill of problem-solving in a practical and immediate manner in their daily interactions.

Information Literacy

Graduates will be able to select pertinent information to construct new concepts or create new understandings and use this information effectively in a range of contexts, which will be demonstrated and, when appropriate, assessed, through tasks that require them to search for and critically assess and evaluate a wide variety of authentic sources composed in their target language.

Ethical Conduct and Social Responsibility

Graduates will be able to demonstrate ethical values and beliefs that are consistent with their roles as interculturally competent and aware individuals. They will engage with authentic issues of social importance in an ethically valid, culturally appropriate, sensitive and equitable manner. Graduates will understand the international implications of local decisions and the local implications of international decisions as they pertain to international business. These attributes will be developed and assessed throughout the course through a range of different activities.

Lifelong Learning

Graduates will be able to demonstrate a scholarly attitude to learning and will be committed to acquiring knowledge and understanding through continuous research and inquiry, and reflection on their own place in their target language and culture(s).

Independence and Collaboration

Graduates will be able to exercise responsibility and accountability for their own learning and professional practice as well as work collaboratively through online and/or on-campus interactive activities and network effectively to achieve common goals and to solve authentic problems in an ethical and culturally appropriate and respectful manner.
