Why study the Bachelor of Business at UNE?

Our Bachelor of Business will help you navigate the world of business across a range of industries and occupations. You will develop skills in creative thinking and critical analysis, communication and business decision making. You will be able to develop and lead ethical, social and environmental solutions to meet business challenges.

Whether you are creating your own micro multinational, small business or large scale enterprise, we believe that your ability to understand business, solve problems and adapt to change is fundamental to success.

The core units of this degree, accounting, business analytics, economics, ethics, management and marketing will give you a strong foundation in business. We use real business case studies to analyse business data, strategy and management practices. Our units use current business research and industry experts to understand regional and global business trends. We value what you already know about the world of business and through our program of study help you to take your learning beyond university into your chosen career.

Our Bachelor of Business offers you a number of majors which can help you to build your career profile. You can choose one or two majors in Accounting*, Agribusiness, Analytics and Informatics*, Business Analytics, Economics, Finance*, Human Resource Management, International Business, Management and Marketing.

Completion of the Accounting major plus four additional units (see Course Rules and Plans) will qualify you for admission to the major professional accounting bodies (CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants ANZ and the Institute of Public Accountants (IPA)). Choose this option if you want an understanding of accounting but also want a broad set of business skills. You can also study accounting in the Bachelor of Accounting.

The Human Resource Management Major is accredited with the Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI).

If you see international opportunities in your future, you can also choose to study a language within your elective units (only available if you study only one major) - Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Italian, Indonesian, Japanese and Spanish are all available. You may also like to consider an international exchange and study a trimester at one of UNE's partner universities to build your global perspective. Alternatively undertake OSSE300 our Overseas Study Experience unit and have the opportunity to travel overseas with fellow students on a guided tour of large multi-national businesses in Asia.

If you choose only one major, you need to choose a further 8 units, which can be chosen from any discipline across the university in order to truly broaden your learning experience.

When you graduate, your major (or majors) will be identified on your testamur and transcript. For example, if you choose the major in Human Resource Management you will graduate with a Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management). Or, if you take two majors such as International Business and Accounting, you will graduate with a Bachelor of Business (International Business) (Accounting).

With online learning support and optional Trimester 3 units, you can accelerate your degree or combine it with periods of full-time employment.

For the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge to the real world, undertake WORK300 Work Integrated Learning which allows you to complete a work placement and have it count towards your degree.

If you are keen on starting up your own business, you can do this as part of our BUS399 Business In Action unit where you will be mentored through the start-up phase. The Business School operates its own Smart Region Incubator which provides a supportive community for start-ups in the region. As students you can be part of this lively entrepreneurial network.

*Candidates may study the Analytics and Informatics major at the Armidale campus (on campus or online) under Rule (a). Study at UNE Sydney Campus is only available for full-time on campus international students admitted under rule (e), completing the Accounting, Analytics Informatics, or Finance majors.

Advanced Standing

Candidates admitted under Rule (b) or Rule (c) shall be granted Block or Specified Advanced Standing based on their admission to candidature, according to the relevant program of study under the Articulation Programs.

Advanced Standing

Candidates admitted under Rule (a) or Rule (e) are referred to the University Policy on Advanced Standing.
Candidates admitted under Rule (b) or Rule (c) shall be granted Block or Specified Advanced Standing, based on their admission to candidature, according to the relevant program of study under the Articulation Programs.
Candidates admitted under Rule (d) shall be granted 48 credit points of Unspecified Advanced Standing at 100-level and 48 credit points of Unspecified Advanced Standing at 200-level.

Period of Candidature

The period of candidature shall be:
(a) three years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to ten years as a part-time candidate.

Candidates who have been admitted to candidature through an approved Articulation Program are referred to Clause 2.17 of the University Policy on Advanced Standing for advice on the pro-rata period of maximum candidature.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 144 credit points with not more than 60 credit points at 100-level, at least 36 credit points at 300-level and with not more than 12 credit points at 400-level.

Candidates who meet the course requirements including one major or two majors shall be awarded the Bachelor of Business.

Exit Pathways

Subject to meeting Advanced Standing rules candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in Business on completion of 48 credit points.
Candidates who apply to discontinue their studies and exit with the Diploma in Business must apply for re-admission and will be subject to current course requirements of the Bachelor of Business. This may mean that they will not receive full recognition for their previous studies should the course structure have changed in response to University or external accreditation body requirements.

Course Aims	The Bachelor of Business aims to create contemporary professionals with a solid grounding in the core business fields of accounting, economics, ethics, management and marketing needed for organisational survival and success. The course will prepare students to take on a role as a future manager with leadership responsibilities for creating a more inclusive and sustainable global economy.
Learning Outcomes	Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of business and management theory and processes and their application to real-world business contexts, including an opportunity to complete a capstone experience, and to promote sustainable business in a globalised economy; use cognitive and communication skills, tools and digital technologies to communicate appropriately and persuasively with a range of stakeholders; apply critical and creative thinking to analyse complex real-world business problems and synthesise materials from a variety of sources in identifying solutions; identify relevant information drawn from a range of sources in order to analyse data and complex business-related issues; evaluate and demonstrate judgement in formulating responses to complex, social, cultural and ethical issues; demonstrate a preparedness to engage in continuous learning and reflection to help inform professional practice; and demonstrate ability to work independently and collaboratively with others to generate solutions to business problems.
Graduate Attributes	Knowledge of a Discipline Knowledge of a discipline is taught, practised and assessed in all units. Students will develop an in-depth knowledge of key business and management theory and apply knowledge in business contexts to solve business problems. Students will also demonstrate a detailed understanding of the global environment in which business is conducted. Students will learn through independent research, interaction with unit materials, unit coordinators and fellow students, and be assessed using case analysis of both hypothetical and real-world examples, analysing and applying theory to a workplace, theory-based assignments and via multiple assessment modes. Communication Skills Communication skills are taught, practised and assessed throughout this course. Students will utilise cognitive and communication skills, tools and digital technologies to communicate appropriately and persuasively with a range of stakeholders. Students will develop oral, written and presentation skills relevant to business contexts through assessments such as essays and oral presentations. Problem Solving This graduate attribute is taught, practised and assessed throughout the course using scenarios requiring students to use cognitive and critical thinking skills to identify business issues, and to analyse and evaluate the relevant theories and concepts to construct business solutions. Information Literacy Information literacy is taught, practised and assessed throughout the course as students need to identify, evaluate and synthesise relevant information drawn from a range of sources in order to analyse complex business-related issues. Ethical Conduct and Social Responsibility Throughout the course, ethical conduct and social responsibility is taught, practised and assessed. Students need to reflect on the principles of professional and social responsibility and apply these to a range of ethical issues and scenarios. This is assessed through evaluation and analysis of reflective based and scenario based assessment tasks. Lifelong Learning Lifelong learning is taught and assessed in this course through reflective tasks that encourage analysis of professional experience, and appreciation of the business as a dynamic discipline. Independence and Collaboration This graduate attribute is taught, practised and assessed in this course. Students are required to work independently and complete learning and assessment activities that require self-directed learning and initiative. Students are also required to collaborate in a variety of learning and assessment tasks throughout the course.
