Why study the Bachelor of Medical Science with Honours at UNE?

The Bachelor of Medical Science with Honours is designed to provide students with training in scientific method and in the verbal and written communication of scientific results.

Students carry out a research project which may be conducted at other sites within Australia, provided the candidate is able to attend the seminars and has a supervisor from the University of New England willing to oversee their progress.

Admission to Candidature

Period of Candidature

The maximum period of candidature shall be one year as a full-time candidate.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 48 credit points at 400-level.

Dissertation

(a) On completion of the course of advanced study and research, the student shall present for examination a dissertation, embodying an independent investigation on a topic approved by the supervisor, in a form approved by the School.
(b) Depending on the topic under investigation, the approval of the relevant Ethics Committee must be sought if required.

Submission of Dissertation

The dissertation is due in the last week of the teaching period. Candidates must submit an electronic copy of the dissertation for examination to the Honours Coordinator. A final electronic version of the dissertation, incorporating any changes recommended by the examiners, must also be submitted prior to a grade being awarded for the dissertation.

Examination of Dissertation

(a) The dissertation will be assessed by at least two examiners neither or whom will be the candidate’s supervisor - one is normally external to the School. The supervisor must submit the names and contact details of the recommended examiners to the Honours Coordinator at least four weeks prior to submission of the dissertation for examination.
(b) Examiners are normally expected to complete and return their report to the Honours Coordinator within FOUR (4) weeks of the dissertation being delivered.
(c) In the event of a disagreement between the examiners, they may be asked to consult and report to the Teaching and Learning Committee through the Honours Coordinator.
(d) The Honours Coordinator will advise the supervisors of the outcome of the examination, along with a copy of examiners’ reports as appropriate, indicating any amendments to be considered. Students need to consult with the supervisor and undertake any minor amendments to the satisfaction of the supervisor.
(e) The supervisor is to advise the Honours Coordinator that the amendments suggested by the examiners have been addressed to his or her satisfaction and that the result may be finalised. The Honours Coordinator will finalise the result.

Classes of Honours

The degree shall be conferred as an Honours degree only.
Consistent with the JMP grading of Honours degree, there shall be three classes of honours, namely First Class Honours (H1), Second Class Honours, Division 1 (H2, 1), Second Class Honours, Division 2 (H2, 2) and Third Class Honours (H3).

Calculation of Honours Results

The final class of honours will be determined on the basis of aggregated assessment results. A grade of Honours Class I (85% or higher); Honours Class II, Division I (between 75% and 84.9%); Honours Class II, Division II (between 65% and 74.9%); and Honours Class III (between 50% and 64.9%).

Re-enrolment

Except with the permission of the Head of School and given only in exceptional circumstances, a candidate who withdraws from the award will not be permitted to re-enrol.

Course Aims	The course aims to produce future researchers and develop new understandings through research activity.
Learning Outcomes	Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: develop research questions and generate research findings designed to address questions relevant to the health of individuals, communities and populations; participate in the pursuit of excellence in research practice; be effective problem solvers, capable of applying typical, critical and creative thinking to a range of research problems; work both autonomously and collaboratively as researchers; and communicate effectively as researchers.
Graduate Attributes	Knowledge of a Discipline Through the process of identifying and reviewing existing evidence and by undertaking a research project, the graduate will acquire comprehensive understanding and knowledge of research methods and their application in the field of study. Drawing on international literature will enable the graduate to develop a global perspective of the evidence base that informs the practice of medicine, and be able to apply their knowledge in any local, national or international context. Communication Skills Written and oral communication skills will be emphasised through scholarly publications and presentation of work. Problem Solving Problem solving is the core basis for investigation and research. Information Literacy The tasks associated with the research project will require use of analytical and research software. Ethical Conduct and Social Responsibility Graduates will develop an understanding and appreciation of their professional responsibilities to examine existing evidence and generate knowledge through research to inform best practice. Also developed will be the understanding and appreciation of their professional commitment to be socially responsible and ethical in the conduct of research and examining evidence. Lifelong Learning The intent of the course is to provide a foundation for further research activity into a future career. Independence and Collaboration The graduate will develop the ability to think and work independently when systematically addressing a research problem but at the same to be able to work effectively as a member of a team recognising the diversity of skills required to problem solve.
