Group 2 - Curriculum Units
Complete 24 credit points for your Secondary Teaching Area/s. These are represented as Teaching Area 1A, 1B, 2A and 2B in the Course Plans.

  • It is possible to undertake 12 or 24 credit points of curriculum methods in English or Mathematics. The asterisk (*) indicates the units that must be studied by any student attempting these teaching areas. Students attempting English or Mathematics as a single Secondary Teaching Area must complete all four units in the appropriate suite. Similarly, students completing a Secondary Teaching Area in the sciences (Biology; Chemistry; Earth and Environmental Science or Physics) must complete all four Science curriculum units.
  • Students undertaking the combined Mathematics/Physics Secondary Teaching Area must complete the two Science Curriculum Units EDSE358 and EDSE361 and the two Mathematics Curriculum Units EDME392 and EDME394.
  • Students undertaking Agriculture as a Secondary Teaching Area must complete EDSE265, EDSE346, EDSE347, and EDSE353.
  • Students undertaking Mathematics/Software Design and Development OR Information Processes and Technology/Mathematics must complete the two Mathematics Curriculum units EDME392 and EDME394 and the two Computing Curriculum units EDIT301 and EDIT302.
  • Students undertaking one HSIE teaching area are required to undertake EDSS311 and the specialised curriculum unit for their selected HSIE teaching area. Students undertaking two HSIE teaching areas are required to undertake EDSS311, EDSS312 and the specialised curriculum unit for each of their selected HSIE teaching areas.

(ii) 36 credit points from Group 4 or Group 5 in a First Secondary Teaching Area; and 24 credit points from Group 4 or Group 5 in an Additional Secondary Teaching Area; or
(iii) 36 credit points from Group 4 languages as an Additional Secondary Teaching Area (for candidates needing 100-level Language units); and 24 credit points from Group 4 or Group 5 in an Additional Secondary Teaching Area.

It is not possible to combine Modern History and Ancient History as Secondary Teaching Areas.
It is not possible to combine two languages as Secondary Teaching Areas.

If a candidate chooses a First Secondary Teaching Area from Group 5, and an Additional Secondary Teaching Area (24 credit points) of English or Mathematics from Group 4, the Additional Secondary Teaching Area contributes towards their Primary Specialisation.

NESA subject content knowledge requirements for languages specify that only units at post introductory level (200-level and above) may be counted towards the teaching area.

Mandatory Literacy and Numeracy Tests/Teaching Performance Assessment

Candidates are required to pass the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students prior to commencing their final professional experience placement.

Candidates are also required to successfully complete a Teaching Performance Assessment during their final professional experience placement.
