Why study the Bachelor of Zoology at UNE?
Zoology is the science of studying and understanding animals living on land, in freshwater or in the sea. It is the branch of biology that covers behaviour, classification, evolution, conservation, distribution, ecology and natural history, but also includes biochemistry and physiology, palaeontology, molecular biology and genetics, and the structure and function of animals.
Zoology students are able to undertake studies in a range of zoological disciplines including animal behaviour; animal ecology; environmental and comparative physiology; entomology; parasitology and freshwater ecology.
Our mission is to:
-provide students with a thorough knowledge of the diversity of the animal kingdom and an understanding of how that diversity arose through a research-led-and-informed curriculum;
- enable students to graduate with practical laboratory and fieldwork skills, critical problem solving skills, and excellent communication skills;
-harness the unique attributes of UNE's location nationally and internationally and access to a unique fauna, unmatched online education experience, and above-world class research credentials to provide undergraduate students with a holistic education within zoology;
- prepare students for further study or employment across the wide range of disciplines within which zoology is critical; provide broad understanding of zoology for students who do not aspire to continue with employment in the area; and
-instil students with an appreciation of the many facets that make up zoological sciences.
Students considering further study and interested in research should consider completing units such as ERS381 or SCI395 as part of their degree. To discuss individual options, interested students should consult with the Course Coordinator or a member of staff from a research area that you are interested in. A fourth Honours year is available to students with an above average academic record. Study is undertaken in one of the disciplines chosen for specialisation leading to the award of Bachelor of Science with Honours. BSc(Hons) graduates who achieve the appropriate level of Honours are eligible to apply to enrol for a research Master degree or the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
Zoologists are employed by research institutions, CSIRO, local state and federal government agencies, museums, national parks, marine parks, zoological gardens, Antarctic research stations, and as teachers in primary and secondary school among others. Zoologists also are also employed in media organisations (radio, television, social media and print), consultancy firms, aquaculture and biotechnology and animal breeding businesses.

Recommended studies: Biology.
For students without the recommended background knowledge, the School offers introductory units in Chemistry and Mathematics.

WORK300 can be included as a unit if the student is able to line up an appropriate work place (e.g. UNE Natural History Museum, Australian Museum, CSIRO, Birdlife Australia, Taronga Zoo) and a program that does not conflict with their studies.

Admission to Candidature
A candidate shall be qualified for admission (see Admission Undergraduate and Postgraduate (Coursework) Rule and the Admission Undergraduate and Postgraduate (Coursework) Procedures).
Students must meet the Inherent Requirements in order to complete this course.
Candidates are referred to the University Policy on Advanced Standing.
Period of Candidature
The period of candidature shall be:
(a) three years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to ten years as a part-time candidate.
To qualify for the award a candidate must pass units to the value of 144 credit points with not more than 60 credit points at 100-level, at least 36 credit points at 300-level and not more than 12 credit points at 400-level.
Program of Study
Candidates shall complete an approved program of study as outlined in the Course Schedule comprising:

Award of Degree
Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Bachelor of Zoology.
Subject to meeting Advanced Standing rules, candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Diploma in Science on completion of 48 credit points. Candidates who apply to discontinue their studies must apply for readmission and will be subject to current course requirements of the Bachelor of Zoology.
Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Advanced Diploma in Science on completion of 72 credit points.
Candidates who apply to discontinue their studies and exit with the Advanced Diploma in Science must apply for readmission and will be subject to current course requirements of the Bachelor of Zoology. This may mean that students may not receive full recognition for their previous studies should the course structure have changed in response to University requirements.
The aim of this course is to teach students about all aspects of the biology of animals - including structure, function, anatomy, physiology, ecology, behaviour and evolution.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
Knowledge of a Discipline
Graduates will be able to demonstrate a depth and range of knowledge relevant to the discipline of zoology including a knowledge of the diversity of the animal kingdom and how that diversity arose (evolution). They will be proficient in a variety of field and laboratory skills in zoology.
Graduates will be able to communicate scientific results and information to a wide range of audiences using multiple mediums (e.g., print, oral and via an online presence).
Graduates will be able to investigate and solve problems in zoology using the scientific method, including statistics and mathematics.
Graduates will be able to collect, understand and evaluate scientific results from a wide range of sources using different platforms.
Ethical Conduct and Social Responsibility
Graduates will be able to take social responsibility by recognising the relevant ethical frameworks within which scientific research on animals is practiced and show a capacity for working responsibly and safely in both individual and team environments.
Graduates will be able to demonstrate the ability for self-directed learning using critical thinking and analytical skills.
Independence and Collaboration
Graduates will be able to function as a part of team members or leaders of a collaborative team.
