Master of Philosophy (Health)

C1. ADMISSION

In compliance with Rule 1 applicants are required to have:

  1. a Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline at the level of Credit (GPA 5) or above; or
  2. a Graduate Diploma in a relevant discipline at the level of Credit (GPA 5) or above; or
  3. a Masters degree by course work in a relevant discipline at the level of Credit (GPA 5) or above; or
  4. satisfy the Committee by means of other qualification/s and relevant experience of adequate preparation for candidature.
C2. COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must pass 72 credit points comprising:

  1. HLTH599D (72 credit point Thesis); or
  2. HLTH599C (48 credit point Thesis) plus 24 credit points of research preparation units.
    Normally research preparation units will consist of: HLTH500, HLTH501, HLTH558A (literature review), HLTH558A (research proposal) or a 6 credit point unit relevant to the conduct of the proposed research project;
  3. in special circumstances, a candidate may substitute another unit for one of those outlined in C2.2, where it has been deemed that a candidate has completed an equivalent unit in a previous award; or where it is deemed by the Head of School to be necessary preparation for the particular research project to be undertaken by the candidate.
C3. ADVANCED STANDING

At the discretion of the Committee and on the recommendation of the Head of School, a candidate may be granted up to 18 credit points of advanced standing for course work units passed prior to admission, provided they have reasonable congruence with those units prescribed in Rule C2.2.

C4. RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

At the discretion of the supervisor and on recommendation of the Head of School, a candidate may be granted up to 18 credit points of recognition of prior learning for relevant research experience and/or publications prior to admission, provided such experience has reasonable congruence with those units prescribed in Rule C2.2.

C5. MINIMUM PROGRESS
  1. a candidate must achieve an overall Credit average (GPA 5) or better, in the units approved for the course, before permission is granted to proceed to the thesis component of the award.  Grades will be reviewed by the principal supervisor in consultation with the Higher Degree Coordinator, prior to the Confirmation of Candidature.
  2. Confirmation of Candidature will be met by completion of coursework or within 6 months of completion of coursework.
C6. AWARD OF DEGREE

Candidates who meet the course requirements listed in these rules shall be awarded the Master of Philosophy with one of the following specialisations (Counselling, Health Management, Health Science, Nursing, Pharmacy or Social Work).

C6. EXIT AWARD

Candidates requiring an exit pathway from the MPhil (Health) may apply to exit from the award with a Graduate Certificate in Research Methods in Health and Social Care, comprising of units: HLTH500, HLTH501, HLTH558A (literature review), HLTH558A (research proposal) or a 6 credit point unit relevant to the conduct of the proposed research project.
