This unit is focused on the practical application of key nutrition issues affecting ruminant, monogastric, equine and companion animals.

Studying this unit, you will use cutting-edge research and knowledge to develop a decision-making framework for nutritional interventions in a range of scenarios.

You will have opportunities to extend your understanding of the social and environmental issues that are relevant to production animals, equipping you for sustainable nutritional management in an era of increasing resource instability.

Topics covered include feed formulation, supplementary feeding and an in-depth overview of applied animal nutrition relevant to production and companion animals.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  2. explain the roles of the key dietary nutrients and their availability in different feed sources, and recall their requirements by key animal groupings in different physiological states;
  3. make practical, evidence-based recommendations for feeding practices for key animal groupings in different physiological states;
  4. make treatment recommendations for nutritional and metabolic disorders in animals; and
  5. evaluate the environmental sustainability and welfare implications of nutritional management strategies for production, working and companion animals.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*

Why study with us?

Graduate and mother Claire Haiek at work as a parenting producer at kidspot.com.au

I'm grateful to UNE for the opportunities studying has given me, but above all, for making me realise I could actually do it, and giving me a sense of accomplishment.
