Unit information
Through a combination of practical exercises and discussions, this unit introduces you to a range of archaeological materials and the ways they are used to interpret human behaviour.
To achieve this, you will be introduced to a range of artefact types and put current analytical methods into practice. Discussion of methodological protocols and issues will be tied directly to your practical exercises, which will take place during an intensive school.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the diverse sources of evidence used by archaeologists (including excavated, representational, observational, artefactual, environmental and other scientific evidence);
- understand and apply laboratory techniques including recording, measurement, analysis and interpretation of archaeological material;
- exhibit an understanding of how archaeological materials are interpreted in changing theoretical, methodological, ethical and social contexts; and
- select and apply appropriate statistical and numerical techniques to processing of archaeological data, recognising the potential and limitations of such techniques.
