Unit information
Plants play a critical role in the function of nearly all ecosystems, using energy from the sun to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen and food. This unit provides a comprehensive understanding of the vital link between the function of a plant and its structure.
Topics covered included seed germination, dormancy and seedling development, photosynthesis, plant growth regulators, plant water use, mineral nutrition, source-sink relations and resource allocation, stress physiology and plant defences against pests, pathogens and other plants.
Studying this unit, you will explore the processes and resources required for plant growth and development.
From cells and tissues, to whole plants and plant communities, you will examine the physiology and functional anatomy, morphology and adaptations of plants in natural and managed Australian ecosystems.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental processes determining the growth of plants in natural and managed ecosystems and communicate this knowledge to others in verbal or written format;
- demonstrate an understanding of the fundamental basis of symbiotic relationships and nutritional adaptations of Australian plans and explain the primary basis of plant water relations and movement of water and nutrients in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum;
- demonstrate appropriate skills in the handling of plant material for microscopic study;
- communicate information to others, using verbal or written formats, the essential aspects of the anatomy of plants; and
- analyse information and apply accordingly to demonstrate the ability to think at different levels of integration, from tissue to whole plant to ecosystem with regard to plant function and structure.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
