Unit information
As global populations age and complex, chronic diseases become increasingly prevalent, development of new therapeutic agents is vital. Drug development is a rapidly evolving field, integrating advanced knowledge of medicinal chemistry and human biology.
This unit introduces you to the drugs used in medicine, exploring their modes of action and cutting-edge methods used for their discovery and development.
Building a chemical understanding of the role of metals in enzymes, drugs and diagnostic agents, you will explore the metabolism of endogenous and exogenous organic drugs, the role of metabolism in toxicity and the effect of metabolism on pharmacokinetics.
You will also examine quantitative methods for determining activity (QSAR) and pharmacokinetic properties (QSPR).
Practical sessions equip you with methods for the synthesis of common functional groups, as well as C-C and C-N bond forming reactions and methods for the isolation of biological compounds.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- understand the properties and mechanisms of action of selected biologically important molecules and understand how new drugs are discovered;
- critically apply the principles of organic chemistry to understand the structure and function of drugs in biological processes;
- critically apply their understanding of medicinal chemistry to design new compounds with appropriate structural features for clinical use;
- solve practical problems relating to the synthesis of medicinally important functional groups; and
- communicate effectively to a scientific audience information relating to the synthesis, extraction and characterisation of organic molecules.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
