Unit Description

This unit explores the fundamental and applied physical chemistry associated with electrochemistry, kinetics, catalysis and energy utilisation, which are four key areas of industrial, environmental and sustainable chemistry. These topics provide the ideal background knowledge and skills for research in these areas and for chemistry secondary-school teachers.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. analyse and evaluate the kinetics of complex reactions and the rate processes that occur at solid surfaces;
  2. demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of reactions that take place in electrochemical cells and the importance of energy in the control of chemical reactions;
  3. use well-developed cognitive and technical skills for problem solving related to chemical systems in industry and the environment;
  4. apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy, judgement and responsibility through an integrated laboratory program; and
  5. demonstrate the ability to transmit knowledge, skills and ideas, based on laboratory or assignment work, using written and graphical communication methods.
