Future proof your career by further developing your Chinese language skills.

In this language proficiency unit you will continue the progression from the 200-level units in Chinese language.

By the time you reach this level, your grounding in all the major grammatical patterns of Modern Standard Chinese is completed; enabling speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in Chinese to be developed to a more sophisticated level. Coverage of topical themes from an intercultural perspective will extend your insights into comparative cultural values and attitudes as expressed through language.

By the end of this unit you should be able to recognise 1000 words in Chinese characters.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

demonstrate knowledge and appropriate use of structures and functions of the Chinese language at intermediate level, and apply them in the context of themes of topical interest;
apply the major grammatical patterns of Chinese effectively and accurately in spoken and written expression at an intermediate level of proficiency;
analyse and evaluate, at an intermediate level, comparative values and attitudes as reflected through language in a variety of contexts relating to life in China, cultural experience and social attitudes;
apply aural and oral skills at an intermediate level of proficiency to communication and discussion in Chinese about themes of topical interest and intercultural issues; and
recognise at least 1000 words in Chinese characters and apply that knowledge to reading and writing tasks, including handwriting tasks.
