Unit Description

This unit provides students with the opportunity to enhance their skills in research and writing. It is an ideal unit to transition to further study and/or the workplace. It draws together key principles and techniques for qualitative research in a range of disciplines, together with strategies of writing that facilitate research and help present findings effectively. The unit has two modules: (i) research practice, covering the process of developing research questions aligned with research methods; and (ii) guided application of this process to work more independently on an issue in a disciplinary area, rehearsing and refining skills of research and communication. Case studies that support this independent work include literature; screen, media and culture; and writing, editing and publishing.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate advanced understanding of principles and methods of qualitative research for exploring issues and developing knowledge in one or more disciplines;
  2. interpret and evaluate a range of research sources and the basis and limits of their authority;
  3. analyse and synthesise sources and complex ideas and arguments;
  4. communicate research findings clearly and coherently, using appropriate conventions of academic writing and/or creative modes;
  5. employ a range of techniques for designing, organising and conducting the stages of a research project that calls for independence and originality in design and execution; and
  6. participate constructively in informed inquiry and debate on a range of academic and professional issues, in familiar and new contexts.
