Unit Description

This unit provides students with an understanding of the major crop protection issues associated with the sustainable production of grain crops in Australia, including cereals, pulses (Legumes) and oilseeds. Topics include weed, disease and pest management, pesticide resistance, chemical application and legislation, grain quality and product integrity, and the application of biotechnology for crop protection.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate broad and coherent technical and theoretical knowledge of the major pests and disease of grain crops and the curent methods of management to reduce their impact;
  2. identify and knowledgeably discuss the important weeds within cropping systems and describe their ecology and control strategies;
  3. explain the problem of pesticide resistance, and describe stategies to avoid or overcome the problem;
  4. understand the principles of, and practical issues involved with, chemical application and outline the legislative responsibilities of all participants in the industry; and
  5. critically examine the issues of grain quality and storage in specific environments or locations.
