Unit information
Gain hands-on experience as a member of multidisciplinary teams, and develop nursing knowledge and skills to coordinate, support, enable and evaluate self-care strategies for people of all ages living with cancer or chronic conditions.
With 80 hours of professional placement, you will explore a range of cancers and chronic conditions, including some conditions specific to developing countries.
Using case-based learning to examine evidence-based approaches and extend your discipline knowledge, themes relating to cancer and chronic conditions will be explored. These include pathophysiology and aetiology, diagnosis and treatment (including complementary therapies), health promotion and current national and global health priorities, and an evaluation of care provision in diverse settings including metropolitan, regional, rural and remote areas.

Notes
This unit includes a 80 hours of professional experience placement.
Professional experience placements will only be arranged for students who meet pre-clinical requirements in the first eight weeks of their enrolment in the course and maintain the currency of these requirements throughout the duration of the course.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- apply an understanding of cancer pathophysiology, diagnosis, aetiology and common treatment options;
- critically analyse and utilise a range of assessment techniques and apply evidence based clinical reasoning in theory, clinical and simulated environments;
- recognise self management capacity and outcomes for a person living with cancer or chronic conditions within a person centred framework;
- plan, deliver and implement evidence based nursing care that incorporates physical, psychological, social, cultural, spiritual and environmental aspects of person centred care in a variety of settings relevant to the person affected by cancer and chronic diseases within a legal and ethical decision making framework;
- critique the history of prevention, public health and the evolution of health promotion in local, national and international contexts; and
- demonstrate respectful and skillful interprofessional teamwork that values the contributions of each member of the health care team, to the management of chronic health problems.
