This unit is a RUILI (Regional Universities Indonesian Language Initiative) approved unit, currently offered in Mataram, Lombok, Indonesia.

Students with a pass of 70% or better in HSC Indonesian Continuers or students with HSC Indonesian Extension or equivalent level of knowledge should enrol at 200 level.

Students with existing competence in Indonesian (including HSC Indonesian Beginners) who are unsure of their current level of competence should contact the discipline convenor to request a placement test.

Indonesian or Malay native speakers are not permitted to enrol in INDN101, INDN111, INDN102, INDN112, INDN201 or INDN211.

In-class assessments are developed, administered and implemented by the Indonesian program provider under supervision from a resident director from one of the RUILI member universities.

The unit is offered in intensive mode in country in January only.

Unit Description

This unit provides students with an introduction to contemporary Indonesian language. It develops basic aural, oral, reading and writing skills. Attention is given to the socio-cultural context of the language, and to functional fluency.

This unit is an equivalent of INDN101 Indonesian Language 1A, but taught in-country, in Indonesia, providing a special immersion experience for beginner level of the Indonesian language and culture.

Materials Textbook information will be displayed approximately 8 weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period. Please note that textbook requirements may vary from one teaching period to the next.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate elementary listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in everyday Indonesian language;
  2. utilise elementary structures and functions of the Indonesian language, in particular grammatical structures;
  3. communicate in Indonesian with some depth on selected topics of everyday life;
  4. apply elementary knowledge of Indonesian cultural and social norms and Indonesian society; and
  5. use cognitive skills to analyse and synthesise information when communicating in Indonesian at an elementary level.
