This unit explores the ways in which modern Indonesian culture is being developed, principally through literature, mass media, and other communicative forms.

The ideas and themes of interest to Indonesian cultural practitioners will be central to the study, as will the influences upon them. Modern cultural activities in different regions of the archipelago will be examined to increase awareness of Indonesian diversity.

The material studied will be mostly in English, but will include some words and expressions in Indonesian with English translation.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge of the development of modern Indonesian culture within Indonesia’s historical context;
  2. identify and synthesise findings presented in scholarly literature on select topics on Indonesian culture and society;
  3. formulate sound arguments and communicate them clearly, concisely, and coherently in written form; and
  4. critically analyse chosen topics in modern Indonesian culture and society with reference to scholarly literature and the broader historical context.
