Unit information
Gain a thorough introduction to significant theories about law.
In this unit you will consider classical theories of law in the form of natural law, but the main emphasis is on twentieth-century theories.
You will explore legal reasoning (including statutory and constitutional interpretation), the relationship between legal and moral reasoning and the legitimacy of judicial activism. Your perspective on law will be broadened not only through consideration of theoretical material but also through focusing on other jurisdictions, especially the US.
The unit aims to strengthen your skills in legal argumentation, including statutory interpretation. You will also develop your analytical and written communication skills, through arguments conducted in a non-legal discourse that you are exposed to in your degree.
Additionally, you will sharpen your awareness of, and sensitivity to, ethical choices presented by law.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
