Unit information

UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home

Phonetics is the study of how humans make and perceive sounds. The specifics of speech sounds (pronunciation) and how they are interpreted are important to those who learn, teach or study language.

This unit will provide you with an introduction to descriptive approaches to the analysis of language sound systems (mostly English but also other languages), building on the knowledge from foundation units in linguistics.

Your focus will be on problem solving and data analysis, rather than theory, though some current theoretical perspectives are also discussed. This unit has an applied focus on writing, spelling, literacy and pronunciation, and will appeal to anyone interested in the learning or teaching of language.

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of the sound systems of English and other languages, including their description, transcription, sound changes and phonological processes;
  2. demonstrate coherent understanding of how phonological data in any language can be approached using the techniques of contemporary descriptive grammar;
  3. exercise critical thinking and judgement in undertaking phonological analysis;
  4. critically explain how phonological facts are relevant to issues in linguistic theory;
  5. provide clear explanations of phonological phenomena to others; and
  6. adapt and apply the knowledge gained here to new linguistic contexts and in professional practice situations.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*

Why study with us?

Graduate and mother Claire Haiek at work as a parenting producer at kidspot.com.au

I'm grateful to UNE for the opportunities studying has given me, but above all, for making me realise I could actually do it, and giving me a sense of accomplishment.
