English is the most used international language in our globally connected world.

This unit provides a critical perspective on international practices of teaching English as a second language. It incorporates perspectives from the fields of language policy, bilingualism and multilingualism studies, identity in second language users and teacher cognition.

You will learn tools for critically analysing the role of TESOL practitioners from the perspective of language ecology and be encouraged to relate the concepts studied to your own language education context.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate coherent theoretical knowledge of the history and development of the international TESOL profession and link it to prevailing theories in Second Language Acquisition;
  2. critically examine the concepts in language policy and planning and influences on language education;
  3. identify and critique discourses pertaining to native speaker linguistic standards, with the ability to transmit this effectively to others;
  4. independently explore concepts of the learner as second language (L2) user and of multicompetence;
  5. analyse sociolinguistic aspects of teacher identity and explain how they can be theorised using teacher cognition theory; and
  6. identify and apply bilingual and multilingual practices in TESOL teaching and plan for such practices in their own teaching context.
