Unit information
This capstone unit will provide you with an advanced capacity to apply sophisticated legal research methods to contemporary natural resource governance problems.
You will critically engage with a range of methodologies and apply these to a real-world research project of your choice. You will gain advanced skills in deconstructing complex legal problems, selecting appropriate research methods, assessing the ethical aspects of research, conducting applied legal research and communicating your project ideas in a clear and meaningful way.
Emphasis is placed on understanding what good governance looks like and developing the critical thinking and communication skills needed to work successfully in natural resource management.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- demonstrate mastery of theoretical knowledge and critically reflect on research theories and methods, and their application;
- critically analyse, assess and justify the use of different research methods, assess risks and weaknesses in the use of those methods, evaluate alternative approaches and propose modifications;
- apply expert cognitive and creative skills to review, analyse, consolidate, justify and synthesise complex legal information, problems and concepts;
- work autonomously to conceive, plan and implement a program of natural resource governance research which blends legal, novel and independent thought;
- present sophisticated ideas and intellectually engage in in-depth discussions of complex governance issues and theories; and
- critically reflect on the social and ethical responsibilities associated with legal research, including textual analysis and empirical studies, and ensure that findings are presented with integrity.
