Unit Description

This unit is a broad introduction to some major and influential political ideologies. Ideologies considered include conservatism, liberalism, Marxism and democratic socialism, as well as such new ideologies as religious fundamentalism. This unit proceeds from the assumption that a knowledge of political ideologies is essential for understanding political systems and institutions and the contexts in which they exist, political behaviour and political discourse.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. exhibit a broad and coherent understanding of key components relating to a range of political ideologies;
  2. analyse a range of political ideologies;
  3. produce clear written or oral communication (including the construction of a logical argument and the selection, evaluation and analysis of evidence); and
  4. apply well-developed research skills.
