Unit Description

Through a focus on the theoretical concept of power, this unit explores some significant, though often ignored, aspects of social life that have an important bearing on the accumulation of wealth, the nature of conflict, and the wielding of political influence. Using both historical and contemporary empirical materials, some of the topics covered include prostitution and slavery, capitalism and crime, narco-politics, murder, violence and electoral politics.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of: various topics and issues related to the politics of crime, sex and corruption in different socio-historical contexts; and the economic, social and political significance of sex, crime and corruption from a global perspective;
  2. demonstrate an understanding of competing approaches to the analysis and understanding of power and their conceptual underpinnings;
  3. apply concepts, in particular ?power?, to reflect critically upon and analyse various topics and issues related to the politics of crime, sex and corruption;
  4. independently develop, through synthesising and evaluating evidence from a range of sources, logical arguments about the relationships between politics, crime, sex, and corruption and communicate these in a persuasive manner; and
  5. independently research and analyse in a coherent written essay, the relationship between politics and various topics and problems related to the politics of crime, sex and corruption.
