Unit Description

This unit explores the interconnections between family forms, marriage arrangements, post-marital residence patterns, domestic and paid labour, and the roles and status of women, in various Asian societies. It also examines how state policies in areas such as paid employment, population and education impact on women and the family.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. demonstrate a broad and coherent knowledge of: the roles and status of women, and variations in family arrangements, in a range of Asian societies; the ways in which family forms, paid employment and state policies impact upon the roles and status of women in Asia; and major theoretical perspectives employed in the study of women and the family;
  2. review critically, analyse, and synthesise knowledge, from a range of sources, about the factors affecting the roles and status of women in Asia, and the competing interpretations about these;
  3. independently develop coherent arguments, based upon the critical evaluation of evidence, explaining the reasons for the diverse roles and status of women in various Asian societies; and
  4. display well-developed research, analytical and written communication skills in the examination of specific case studies concerning the roles and status of women, and the ways in which family forms, paid employment, and state policies affect these.
