Unit Description

This unit examines the creation, through the arts, of societies which enjoy sustainable peace. It begins with a critique of the pervasive nature of militarism and violence embedded deep in the cultural fabric of many societies, influencing the films we watch, clothes we wear, games we play, and toys we buy our children. It critiques discrepancies in history education with regard to war and peace, and examines artistic and cultural processes, institutions and artefacts designed to create peace, such as peace museums, peace journalism, peace education, peace gardens, and resistance to violence through cultural means. We examine the efficacy of these attempts. Particular art-forms focussed on include film-making, fine arts, theatre and music.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. analyse the issues and theories surrounding cultural peace-building and present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas;
  2. independently research and analyse how culture, violence and peace intersect, and how these have been viewed differently over time;
  3. evaluate how they can apply a broad and coherent body of knowledge and skills relating to cultural peace-building;
  4. demonstrate critical thinking, initiative, responsibility and accountability in the planning and execution of their essays; and
  5. demonstrate and effectively communicate a broad and coherent body of acquired knowledge and understanding with depth in the concept of cultural peace-building.
