Unit information
The Enlightenment Project which began in the eighteenth century involved the idea that through the application of reason, rationality and scientific methodology, humans could make sense of the natural and social world.
This unit provides a critical exposition of the Enlightenment Project, especially as it applies to science and to religion.
Among other topics, there will be an introduction to the thought of Hume and Kant, and an examination of some contemporary responses to these two key enlightenment thinkers, including a discussion of realism concerning science and religion.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- present a clear, coherent and independent exposition of knowledge and ideas relating to contemporary epistemological theories;
- demonstrate a broad and coherent body of knowledge of and apply critical analysis to the Hume/Kant debate; and
- apply critical thinking skills and well developed judgement to discuss the modern philosophies of religion.
