Unit information

UNE student studies on a laptop on her lounge at home
Friendship, love and sex are all central elements of a flourishing human life. But what are they? And how do they feature in a well-lived human life? In this unit you will explore a range of philosophical issues such as the nature and meaning of romantic love, friendship, perversity, gender and sexual identity. You will begin with an examination of key historical texts including those of Plato, Aristotle, Immanuel Kant and Mary Astell before moving to recent philosophical debates. You will consider, among other things: What is the nature and value of friendship? Do we have grounds for loving the people that we love, and does their gender matter? What are the proper boundaries of sexual practice? What role, if any, should government regulation have here? At the heart of these issues is the normative question of how an individual and a society can live and function well.

Studying online

At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.

We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*

I'm grateful to UNE for the opportunities studying has given me, but above all, for making me realise I could actually do it, and giving me a sense of accomplishment.
