Unit information
Physiology, the science of how the human body works to support life and grow, is a branch of biology with broad applications. This unit introduces you to human anatomy and physiology.
Studying this unit, you will develop a basic knowledge and understanding of cells, tissues, body fluids, organ systems, and the underlying chemical and physical principles.
You will apply this knowledge to the structures and functions of the integumentary, musculoskeletal, nervous and endocrine systems, by completing practical activities. These activities will introduce you to a range of invaluable technical laboratory skills and offer opportunities to extend your scientific thinking and teamwork abilities.
By building a knowledge base of key physiology and anatomy concepts, you will enhance your understanding of critical concepts in other units in human physiology, pathophysiology and biomedical sciences at basic and advanced levels.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:
- make appropriate use of basic chemical terminology describing the major characteristics of biologically important molecules, especially in relation to their functions in the body;
- identify the major structures of the cell and its functions, including an understanding of the cell cycle and cell division;
- describe the structures of the major types of body tissues and the components and functions of body systems, emphasising homeostasis, and its maintenance by feedback systems in health and disease;
- apply this knowledge and understanding to the structures and functions of the integumentary, musculoskeletal, nervous, sensory and endocrine systems;
- develop practical and teamwork skills which will allow students to interpret observations of body structure and functions, and apply scientific principles and techniques; and
- interpret and critically evaluate scientific literature and communicate findings.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
