Unit information
From tattoos, celebrity diets, eating disorders and the 'obesity crisis', trans and intersex bodies, to the promises of biomedicine: contemporary life is saturated with concerns about 'the body'. This unit introduces you to the key theoretical and conceptual frameworks for understanding the importance of the body to the organisation of everyday life.
You will explore a range of contemporary social issues that have, at their heart, a concern with the body, including the gendered body, the disabled body, the raced body, and fat, fit and aging bodies.
You will also analyse practices and technologies that modify the body, including health and fitness, cosmetic surgery and` the promises of new biotechnologies (such as stem cell research) and their possible implications for transforming our understandings of the social world.

Good Universities Guide 2024Studying online
At UNE we know it takes more than just being online to be a great online university. It takes time and experience. We pioneered distance education for working adults back in the 1950s, so we’ve been doing this longer than any other Australian university.
We understand the challenges faced by busy adults studying at home. We know that a vital part of online study is your engagement with the learning community. Communication with your classmates, teaching staff and university support staff will enhance your study experience and ensure that your skills extend beyond the subject matter. UNE’s teaching staff are experts in their field which is why UNE consistently receives five stars from students for teaching quality, support and overall experience.*
