Unit Description

This unit gives students the opportunity to enhance their skills in research and research-informed writing by studying the writing processes of novice and expert writers in a range of academic disciplines. It introduces key principles and techniques for qualitative research in writing. Students are guided through all stages of a research project as they learn to develop research questions, select methods, plan and conduct research, and clearly communicate findings. The unit is appropriate for students who wish to become more independent and effective researchers and writers in a range of disciplines including humanities, arts, education, social sciences and sciences. It is an ideal unit to support students' transition to further study and the workplace.

Learning Outcomes (LO) Upon completion of this unit, students will be able to:

  3. analyse and synthesise a range of sources, ideas and arguments;
  4. communicate research findings clearly, coherently and with integrity, using appropriate conventions of academic writing and/or creative modes; and
  5. employ a range of techniques for designing, conducting and communicating the stages of a research project with a degree of independence.
