Why study the Master of Clinical Leadership at UNE?

The Master of Clinical Leadership at UNE provide students with the opportunity to develop and enhance their skills and knowledge of health leadership roles at a postgraduate level. It is a flexible distance education program which allows students to study a generic Masters course in Clinical Leadership or focus on leadership in one of two specialty areas: 1) Health Management and Leadership, or 2) Clinical Education and Teaching.

Graduates of this course will be prepared to assume leadership roles across a range of healthcare disciplines, roles and contexts. This course is designed to reflect a range of heath reform agendas to build leadership capacity in clinical environments.

Entry Requirements

A candidate shall:

(a) have successfully completed a relevant AQF equivalent Bachelor degree from a recognised university in Australia or overseas; or

(b) have successfully completed the Graduate Certificate in Health Management or the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Education and Teaching or equivalent; and

c) international students must meet the University's English language requirements.

Additional Requirements

Students will either be admitted at UNE or Southern Cross University and study 50% or more of the course at their host institution. The remainder of the course will be completed via cross-institutional enrolment.

Advanced Standing

Advanced standing for 12 credit points may be granted for students who have successfully completed the Clinical Excellence Commission- Clinical Leadership Program or the Syndicated Leaders Course offered by NSW Health. All other advanced standing requests would be considered on an individual basis as per UNE policy.

Admission to Candidature

A candidate shall:

(a) 1.5 years as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to six years as a part-time candidate.

For candidates admitted under Rule (b) the period of candidature shall be:
(a) one year as a full-time candidate;
(b) up to four years as a part-time candidate.

Course Requirements

To qualify for the award, and except with the permission of the School, a candidate admitted under Rule (a) must pass units to the value of 72 credit points.

To qualify for the award, and except with the permission of the School, a candidate admitted under Rule (b) must pass units to the value of 48 credit points.

Candidates must complete at least 50 per cent of their units from the University of New England.

Award of Degree

Candidates who meet the course requirements shall be awarded the Master of Clinical Leadership.

Exit Pathways

Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Graduate Certificate in Clinical Education and Teaching upon successful completion of 24 credit points in the Clinical Education and Teaching specialisation.
Candidates who discontinue their studies in the course may be eligible to exit with the Graduate Certificate in Health Management on completion of 24 credit points in the Health Management and Leadership specialisation.

Course Aims	The aim of this course is to prepare health professionals for clinical leadership roles. They may specialise in either health management and leadership or clinical education and teaching, or a combination of both.
Learning Outcomes	Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: demonstrate current knowledge of health leadership reform agendas and integrate it for application in the healthcare industry; recognise the roles of clinical leaders and apply learning to leadership roles in healthcare and/or clinical education settings; evaluate and discuss contemporary social, political and professional expectations of clinical leadership roles; demonstrate the ability to read, understand and critically review relevant scholarly and research papers; and prepare oral and written reports to a level appropriate for health leaders.
Graduate Attributes	Knowledge of a Discipline The Master of Clinical Leadership enhances knowledge of the scope of leadership roles in clinical healthcare settings and prepares graduates, from a diverse range of clinical backgrounds, to assume such roles. This knowledge is taught, practiced and assessed across the unit content and via written, oral and experiential assessments throughout this course. Communication Skills Communication is taught practiced and assessed in this course. Via distanced education students will practice their abilities to communicate on a professional level. This will include the development of literature reviews, reports, presentations and work-based projects to assess communication. Global Perspectives Students will be exposed to relevant international literature and recent research papers regarding the dynamic leadership roles in healthcare settings. Students will be taught to evaluate local, national and international trends in leadership and practise the critical review and comparison of different approaches in a number of their assessment tasks. Information Literacy Students will be assessed on their skill in accessing appropriate resources via a range of information technologies, e.g. web-sites and e-journal databases. Most of the units will be offered with a substantial online component requiring students to practise accessing relevant content and interacting online. Life-Long Learning Education provided in this course will allow students to build on their foundational knowledge of leadership roles in healthcare, by enhancing their self-directed learning skills, such as how to search for and critically review relevant information and apply it to practice. Problem Solving This course will provide a strong emphasis on problem-solving and students will be taught via a number of case-studies, where they will practise the application of their knowledge to potential clinical leadership problems. These abilities will be assessed via written assignments and online discussions. Social Responsibility A major component of this course is building leadership skills that equip graduates to effectively lead the delivery of health services and support other clinical staff to provide high quality patient care. Team Work The interprofessional focus of this course reflects the team-based approach to healthcare that is gaining momentum globally across all health disciplines. In particular effective leadership is based on leading teams to work effectively together to provide high quality care for patients. Students will be taught and assessed on their ability to look beyond their own disciplinary background, in written assignments and discussions.
